Mauk Donnabhain is a queer, working-class writer from Donegal, Ireland. His work was shortlisted for the Stockholm Writers’ Festival First 5 Pages award in 2023, and he has had short stories shortlisted for The Plaza Prize: Sudden Fiction (2023), and the Colm Tóibín International Short Story award (2020) and longlisted for the Minds Shine Bright competition (2023) and Write by the Sea (2025) He has had other work published in Crannóg, The Honest Ulsterman, Profiles Literary Journal, Trasna, The Galway Review and others. He lives in London.

Mauk Donnabhain blogs

In 2009, I decided to go on a ‘learning journey’ around the world, taking in 40 different places. I continued blogging until 2015. I read books by their most famous authors, watched movies, listened to music, and cooked at least one of their most famous dishes.

In July 2010, I came up with a crazy idea of getting to know Britain better by visiting every major town/city ending in -caster, -cester and -chester.

I thought that this might lead to some random trips to parts of Britain that I’d never been to before, and what started off as a crazy idea led to 8 years of visiting and blogging about 51 ‘Chesters’
